Looking for a new experience instead of sitting in a restaurant with the rest of Metro Vancouver on Mother’s Day? Instead, try something special and benefit someone else in need or enjoy all that nature has to offer. Some ideas below.

Wednesday, May 9

  • Grapes for Good wine and beer tasting fundraiser event to raise money for the Ride to Conquer Cancer.  7pm-11pm at Firefly Wines on Cambie and 12th. For info and tickets click here.

Friday, May 11

  • Cooking For A Cause. Hosted by King Pacific Lodge and the Gitga’at First Nation to celebrate marking the launch of their co-founded charitable organization: Guarding the Gifts. Vicki Gabereau and David Suzuki presenting, Matthew Good performing while you munch your way through some fine cuisine at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery . Tickets and info at Cooking For A Cause.

  • A Growing Affair – 10:00 – 4:00 6804 SW Marine Drive @ 16th Ave. A plant sale to support the UBC Botanical Garden. Activities, demonstrations and fun for all ages. Info at: UBC Botanical Garden.
  • Plant sale at 6467 Holly Park Drive, Ladner.  All money raised goes directly to gardens for all to enjoy. Info: Ladner Community Garden Society.
  • Environmentally friendly activities to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day. Check out the Green Club website  for more information:
    • Bird Walks – bird experts will lead bird walks in five different Vancouver parks.
    • Stoney Creek Community Centre – annual release of coho salmon smolts, environmental displays and family-friendly activities at the Jennifer Atchison Environmental Centre.
    • Nature Tea Party – explore Green Timbers Park. Treat your mom to a special celebration for Mother’s Day decorating cookies and walk a nature trail.
    • Tynehead Regional Park – release salmon fry into the Serpentine River, and enjoy a hatchery tour, children’s activities and a walk through river habitat.
    • Colony Farm Regional Park – learn about herons and other wildlife, and the importance of the park to migratory birds. Discover what’s sprouting in the community gardens and take a guided nature walk in search of the brilliant Lazuli Bunting. Organic seedlings available for purchase.
  • Gala for Hope 2012. Get all glammed up for a dinner and dance 5:30pm – 12:00am, Riverside Grand Ballroom, Richmond. Dress is formal with a touch of pink! Saturday and Sunday, May 12-13

  • The Georgia Straight is sponsoring B.C. Children’s Hospital Mother’s Day Campaign, a two-day event in which restaurants donate a portion of sales to help ill or injured kids. Check out the Children’s Hospital website  above to find out which restaurants are participating.

Sunday, May 13 – Mom’s special day

  • Stanley Park Nature House – celebrate the wonders of nature with Mom and learn about bird migration. Register and info at Stanley Park Ecology.
  • Envision Run for Mom 8k, 5k, 1k (10:00 am) to benefit the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation, Chilliwack. Supporting programs for women and children at Chilliwack General Hospital. Online registration and info.
  • The Arthritis Society is holding a WALK TO FIGHT ARTHRITIS at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at Athlete’s Village Vancouver. Choose 1 km or 5, and support this cause with your and your friends’ pledges. Info at Walk to Fight Arthritis.
