Peninsula Productions presents Explorer Idol, a concert for children

January 17, 2012

On Saturday, February 18th at 11 am at First United Church, Peninsula Productions presents Explorer Idol, the next in its concert series for children. Before the world was mapped, explorers set out to discover new worlds – to boldly go where no one had gone before. If they succeeded, they became the idols of their age – lauded by kings, queens, and commoners alike. Explorer Idol is a musical search for Canada’s greatest explorer.

Explorer Idol introduces six of the greatest Canadian explorers. With music styled after “The British Invasion”, William Bligh, James Cook and George Vancouver are the house “band”. It’s a life and death contest to find out which of these six historical “celebrities” will be the first to discover the elusive Northwest Passage. A final vote will determine Canada’s “Greatest Explorer”. This show lasts for 45 minutes and is suitable to K – 12 audiences. Tickets are $15 and available from Surrey Arts Centre, Tapestry, and at the door before the event.

Explorer Idol is the latest in a series of theatrical musicals created and performed by Canadiana Musical Theatre Company. Their works are drawn from pivotal events in Canadian history that nurture a  passion and love for Canadian heritage. The very talented Allen Desnoyers is the artistic director, composer, playwright and musical director. He has been nominated for three Jessie Richardson awards for outstanding work as an actor, musical director, and composer, and has been involved in theatre for twenty years launching several theatre companies that continue to this day.

His compositions have included, When the Sun Meets the Earth, a play about a depression-era farmer; The Birth of British Columbia about the Cariboo gold rush;  Dreams of Kings and Carpenters; The Birth of the C.P.R.; The Blackfoot and the Redcoats about the North West Mounted Police; and The Klondike Rag.
